Research
The Seto Marine Biological Laboratoy is located on the southwestern coast of the Kii Peninsula. Taking advantage of this, we are conducting research in the fields of natural history such as morphological and molecular level classification and phylogeny of marine invertebrates, biogeography, phylogenetic geography, ecology, and animal behavior. We own two vessels as research training vessels and use them for education and for the collection survey of plankton, which is a creature in shallow waters. At Hatake Island, an uninhabited island with abundant nature in Tanabe Bay, we conduct field research and education. It is certified as an educational base by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and is used by university and graduate students nationwide. The Kyoto University Shirahama Aquarium exhibits about 500 species of marine organisms that inhabit the Kii Peninsula, and is one of the leading aquariums in Japan for exhibiting marine invertebrates.
