Research

Research themes: (1) Analysis of biodiversity, (2) Elucidation of lineage evolution, (3) Research on speciation mechanisms.

(1) We conduct field surveys mainly in forests and grasslands of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Himalayas to discover and describe new genera and new species, and are working to elucidate the flora of various regions. (Figs. 1, 2).

Fig. 2. Field survey (Malay Peninsula)

(2) We study how various traits such as morphology, anatomy, embryology, and chromosomes have evolved against the background of a phylogenetic tree based on the molecular information of DNA, leading to the acquisition of the diversity seen at present. (Figs. 3, 4).

Fig. 4. Scanning electron microscope image of the achene surface of Carex hakonensis (Carex hakonensis) [Acta Phytotaxonomica et Geobotanica 70 (2)]

(3) We are trying to clarify the formation of the distribution of various land plants mainly by population genetic analysis using a next-generation sequencing (Fig. 5). We are also observing the pollination patterns of early spring plants and working on research on the mechanism of species maintenance and sequestration (Fig. 6).
