Research

Research Focus of the Sub-department of Animal Conservation and Welfare

This sub-department focuses on terrestrial and marine wildlife (mammals, birds, etc.) to understand their ecology, behavior, and society, mainly through laboratory work. Specifically, we are working to elucidate the genetic diversity and infectious diseases of populations through DNA and parasite analysis, to monitor individual physiology through hormone analysis, and to preserve germ cells of rare species. In addition, we aim to elucidate the cognitive functions and behavioral mechanisms of various animals through experimental psychological methods and behavioral observations. The application of these results to the welfare and breeding of captive individuals are used to promote ex situ conservation.

Faculty members are located at the Wildlife Research Center on the Yoshida campus in Kyoto and on the Inuyama Campus in Aichi Prefecture.

See the CICASP website for information regarding entrance examination procedures for international students.
